What medium skin tone means

Medium skin tone is the middle depth band in Style Look Lab's five-band adaptation of the ten-step Monk Skin Tone Scale. Here it covers source swatches 5–6. That placement describes how light or deep a current reading is; it does not decide whether an undertone is warm, cool, neutral, or olive.

This is a working navigation model, not an official boundary published with the Monk scale. Another chart or cosmetics range may place the word “medium” differently. Use the label to compare options inside this site, then keep the actual swatch match—not the name—as your reference.

The practical order matters. First locate the current depth between the neighboring light and tan bands. Only after that should you compare undertones. Changing both variables at once makes it impossible to tell whether a sample looked wrong because it was too light, too deep, too warm, or too cool.

Find the light and tan boundaries first

Style Look Lab places medium between light (source swatches 3–4) and tan (7–8). Those pairs are the site's adaptation; MST itself supplies ten tones rather than these five named bands. A screen match is also approximate because room light, display settings, the body area being compared, and individual variation can shift what you see.

Use two boundary checks instead of asking whether a single swatch “looks medium.”

  1. Hold the viewing conditions still. In indirect daylight, with brightness and color filters unchanged, compare the inside of the forearm with the light, medium, and tan pairs on the skin tone chart. Treat the closest pair as a working reference, not a measurement.
  2. Check the edge you nearly crossed. If light and medium are close, compare only those two. If medium and tan are close, compare only that pair. A result that changes when the screen or light changes belongs near a boundary and should stay provisional.
  3. Use a familiar base product as a second observation. Compare a current good-enough match with one nearby lighter option and one nearby deeper option from the same formula. Oxidation and brand numbering can change the result, so judge all three after the same wear time.

If the light pair remains closer, use the Hub's light skin tone section. If the tan pair remains closer, continue with the tan skin tone guide. There is no penalty for sitting near an edge; the purpose of a band is navigation, not identity.

Medium is not another word for olive

Medium names a depth in this site's model. Olive names one of the four undertone outcomes used by the site. They can appear together, but neither one implies the other. Calling every ambiguous medium match “olive” skips the same-depth comparison that could separate an undertone question from a depth or product problem.

The descriptions below are Style Look Lab's editorial starting points. They are not biological categories, and no cited skin-color standard validates the warm/cool/neutral/olive mapping.

Warm medium skin

Within this site's model, “warm” means that the warm option is the more useful starting point when products at the same depth are compared. Try a warm, neutral, and cool sample from one formula under the same conditions. Record which direction looks least separate from the skin; do not infer the answer from a shade name such as honey or golden.

Cool medium skin

Here, “cool” means the cool option is the more useful same-depth starting point. A warm sample looking orange can be a clue inside this comparison, but it is not proof by itself: depth, oxidation, room light, and the formula can create a similar observation. Repeat with a second product before treating the direction as useful.

Neutral medium skin

Here, “neutral” means neither warm nor cool clearly leads across the site's comparison questions. It does not mean every product or color will work. Brand labels vary, and a neutral product can still be too light, too deep, too saturated, or simply different after it dries.

If warm, cool, and neutral samples all remain conspicuous in different ways, use the medium olive section as a separate hypothesis to test. Style Look Lab treats that pattern as a practical clue within its own quiz; the external sources listed below do not establish it as a diagnostic rule.

Compare undertones without changing depth

A useful comparison changes one thing at a time. Pick one formula with three neighboring undertone labels at the closest available depth. Apply equal, narrow stripes along the jaw or another area you normally use for product matching, then view them together in the same indirect daylight. Follow the product's normal dry-down time so one stripe is not judged wet and another dry.

Write down observations rather than a verdict: “warmer stripe looks more separate,” “cooler stripe changes after ten minutes,” or “all three remain visible.” Repeat on another day or with another formula. Agreement gives you a better shopping starting point; disagreement tells you the evidence is sensitive to product or viewing conditions.

The skin tone test turns several observations into one of the site's result states and shows which answers affected it. Its weights, undertone labels, runner-up logic, and medium routing are internal rules and have not been independently validated.

Use clothing as a controlled comparison

Clothing can test a styling direction without pretending to measure skin. Choose two tops with similar fabric, coverage, and brightness but different color direction—for example, a warm muted red and a cool muted red. View them one after the other in the same place, without makeup if that is practical, and note which keeps the face and garment visually separate.

Then change brightness instead of color direction: compare a softer and a clearer version of one color family. This second pass helps distinguish a temperature preference from a contrast preference. The result is an outfit decision for those garments, not a universal rule about medium skin.

For a broader palette that also considers overall depth and contrast, continue to color analysis. Medium depth alone cannot select a season.

Foundation names are not measurements

“Medium,” “beige,” “honey,” and numbered shade names are product navigation, not a shared scale between brands. One brand's medium may sit beside another brand's light-medium or tan. Formula opacity, finish, and oxidation can also make two products with similar labels behave differently.

Keep a small reference note instead of trusting the label: brand and formula, shade, where it was checked, lighting, wear time, and whether the mismatch looked lighter/deeper or warmer/cooler. That record is more portable than the word medium and makes a future comparison reproducible.

When a medium match changes

A current depth reading can move when recent sun exposure, body area, lighting, camera processing, display settings, or surface products change the observation. The CIE and Wang references below support treating measurement conditions and location as part of the reading; they do not define how many bands a person should move or validate this site's quiz.

If a familiar match stops working, recheck depth before changing undertone. Compare the same body area, in the same lighting, with the same display settings or product formula where possible. If the depth pair changes while the same undertone direction remains the better starting point, update the depth reference. If both change, keep the result open and repeat under controlled conditions.
