The label depends on that two-direction relationship, not prominent cheekbones alone. Heart and oval are the most useful comparisons when the upper taper or the transition toward the chin feels gradual.

Begin at the cheek line

Find the widest visible point on a centered image without assuming it sits at a named bone. Then follow the outer contour upward toward the forehead and downward toward the chin. In this site’s working description, both paths draw inward enough for the cheek-level span to remain the main width cue.

One dramatic shadow can imitate this relationship. Compare the actual edge of the face rather than the light pattern across it, and keep hair clear of the temple area. The diamond label describes a visible outline in one image; it does not diagnose skeletal structure.

A three-check contour audit

Use a single portrait and make three separate overlays so that one observation does not carry the whole decision:

  1. Width marks. Draw short vertical guides at the forehead, cheek and lower-jaw spans. Observe which guide reaches farthest without converting the marks into a universal formula.
  2. Upper path. Trace only from the broad cheek area toward the forehead. Note whether the line draws inward or stays comparatively steady.
  3. Lower path. On a fresh copy, trace from the same cheek point toward the chin. Compare a quick draw inward with a gradual oval-like transition.

Repeat the audit on a second photo only if camera distance, height and head position match. Mixing conditions makes the two overlays unsuitable for a direct comparison.

Diamond, heart or oval?

A heart-shaped face can share the draw inward below the cheeks. The distinction in this site’s vocabulary is above the cheek line: diamond also reads narrower toward the forehead, while heart is identified primarily through the lower-face taper and does not require one exact upper width.

An oval face can also be widest near the cheeks and narrow toward the chin. In Style Look Lab’s working comparison, its transitions read more gradually; if the cheek point does not create a clear directional turn, oval may describe the same image more usefully.

Move texture above or below the cheek

Hair can place a second contour beside the face. Compare these directions without treating any one as compulsory:

  • hair kept close near the temples with texture becoming stronger below the cheek;
  • a soft fringe with the sides held quiet;
  • volume distributed above the cheek line;
  • an open forehead with movement beginning near the jaw.

For a controlled experiment, use the same cut twice and move the strongest texture from cheek level to below the jaw. Observe whether the face outline or the hair perimeter leads the composition. Frames, brows and makeup around the middle

First compare two frames that both fit. Give one a stronger upper edge and the other an even visual weight around the lens. This tests whether attention remains centered near the cheek line or moves upward. A second useful test compares a frame whose widest point aligns near the cheek with one that stays more uniform from top to bottom.

For brows, hold thickness steady and compare a centered arch with a longer, quieter line. For makeup, compare cheek color placed near the central cheek area with a version diffused outward, leaving eye and lip emphasis unchanged.
