In Style Look Lab’s working model, a round face shape has a length and width that read close together, a broad cheek area, and a curved jaw transition. The useful distinction is not whether the face looks full; it is whether curve or angle remains visible when the photograph and crop are held constant.

Read the curve before the label

Round is a relationship among visible length, width and jaw movement. It is not a statement about weight, age or cheek softness. Begin at the point below the ears and follow the outer line toward the chin. A gradual curve supports this site’s round description more than one isolated measurement does.

The forehead and jaw may still differ, and features within the face do not have to be circular. The label concerns the outside outline in a chosen image. If an expression changes the cheek area, use a relaxed frame for the comparison rather than trying to classify a smile.

A round-square comparison at the jaw

The closest question is often round versus square, because both can read similar in length and width. Ignore the category name for one pass. Trace only the lower third. A continuous bend toward the chin supports round; a clearer corner and straighter lower segment supports square in Style Look Lab’s model.

Oval can also share a curved jaw. The oval guide becomes useful when vertical length is more noticeable while the crop and head position stay the same. Do not compare two photographs taken at different distances and attribute the whole change to face shape.

Why the camera can change the answer

Google’s MediaPipe documentation describes a Face Landmarker that returns landmarks from images or video. It does not assign a round label. Style Look Lab applies its own classifier and geometry rules after landmark detection, so the source supports the technical input rather than the category.

A close phone camera can make the center of a face occupy more of the frame, while a tilted head changes the visible jaw path. Hair across the temples can alter the apparent width. This is why a repeat check should hold distance, lens, crop and pose steady. The same input may reproduce the same result; that implementation property does not establish that the label is externally verified.

A frame test with equal fit

Frame advice becomes useful only after fit is controlled. Choose two frames with similar total width, lens depth and bridge position: one with a rounded upper line, one with a straighter edge. Photograph each from the same position. Compare whether repeated curves or a geometric interruption better matches the visual mood you want.

Do not let a different frame size decide the test. An oversized round frame and a narrow angular frame change scale as well as edge shape. If both work for different outfits or expressions, keep both; the round label does not demand a single frame vocabulary.

Place hair volume on purpose

Hair changes the silhouette around the face, so decide where you want visual activity rather than following a corrective rule. Four useful directions to preview are:

  • an offset part that introduces asymmetry;
  • texture concentrated above the cheek line;
  • a broken or airy fringe that creates small interruptions;
  • waves held closer at the cheek and fuller near the ends.

Compare only one placement at a time. For a direct test, preview the same cut once with crown texture and once with volume concentrated at the sides. Neither placement is inherently better; they simply emphasize different relationships. The hairstyle preview can keep the source image constant while you compare.

Brows, makeup and circular repetition

Brows can echo the face with a soft curve or introduce a straighter directional line. Test those two paths without changing thickness and color at the same time. The point is to see what the line contributes, not to force the brow into a prescribed shape.

For makeup, compare a softly diffused cheek placement with a more directional placement on separate versions of the same photo. Keep eye and lip emphasis unchanged. This isolates whether you prefer a repeated rounded movement or a deliberate change in direction. Product finish and lighting may affect the observation.

Is a round face defined by full cheeks?

Not in this guide. Cheek fullness can change with expression and does not describe the entire outline. Style Look Lab looks at relative length, width and the path of the jaw together.

How can I tell round from square without measuring everything?

Can camera distance make my face read differently?

Yes. Perspective changes when the camera moves, so compare images made with the same lens and distance. A result from one image remains a two-dimensional interpretation.

What should I do with a round-and-oval result?
